Exploring and discovering new wines to enjoy can be a lot of fun – and Italy is a great region to peruse. Italy has more diversity in grape varieties and types of wine than any other country in the world. Some have flavor profiles that are similar to American wines, and some will be more of a departure – it just depends on how adventurous you’re feeling.
There are many fantastic Italian wines that are not a big departure from the American palate. Super Tuscans are made with Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah among others – and are sometimes blended with Italian varietals. Since these are wines made with noble grapes most Americans already enjoy, they are a perfect bridge into enjoying Italian wines.
Italy is also famous for wine made from grapes that aren’t grown successfully anywhere else. For example, Barolos and Barbarescos are both made from the Nebiolo grape. These are world class wines that are incredible with food.
